Day 3 August 18, 2011
Now that everyone has been through two full days of camp, everyone is starting to get into the routine of things. The schedule stays the same every day, so they went through the four rotations again. In sports, the campers had tons of fun with a water balloon toss. It was a great way to help everyone cool off! In drama they played Start Stop, where one person started a story line, and when the counselor said stop, the next camper took over.
In outdoor adventure, they got to hang out at the treehouse, where Pumba and Iceman taught them basic first aid and how to identify the various posionous plants, snakes, and spiders in Texas. And in arts and crafts, the campers got super creative in making sock puppets.
Pool time was a blast, like always.
There was also a scavenger hunt. Every unit had their own set of clues that took them around the campsite and made them do various challenges, including coming up with new cheers, forming letters on the basketball court, and dressing up one of their counselors as Minnie Mouse. Their prize was a unit flag that their unit leader had made them the night before. Now they can wave it around everywhere they go this week to show off unit pride!
After dinner during the counselor skit was probably the loudest I’ve heard the kids yet. Tonight’s skit was a Chubby Bunny Unit War. Each unit picked a counselor and they had to place as many marshmellows in their mouth as they could and say “Chubby Bunny”. The kids were really cheering for their counselors.
Our all-camp activity was SO much fun! Each cabin picked a counselor and dressed them up using items from their suitcases for our counselor fashion show. There were some pretty interesting outfits!
Day 2 of camp!! August 16, 2011
What a day! Today was the first full day of activities, and we are off to a great start! The campers go through four rotations: arts & crafts, drama, sports, and outdoor adventure. In arts & crafts the campers made journals for them to write in whenever there is downtime throughout the week. They also made address books so they can stay in touch with the new friends they make here at Kesem! In sports, we had a blast playing knockout. For outdoor adventure, each unit bonded through fun team building activities. The best one had to be where they had to form groups based on the animal sounds they had to make. And in drama they had some fun with improv. Campers had to put together skits using props in the room. They also played a really fun game where they had to mirror the movements of their partner.
Pool time was a blast! Our facility’s pool is so much fun, with slides built by Schlitterbahn. And we introduced the campers to a new game: Ga-Ga. Hebrew for “touch-touch”, it’s a modified form of dodgeball. The campers stand in an enclosed pit and hit the ball towards each other. You can’t throw or catch it, it can’t hit anyone above the waist, and it can’t be hit out of the pit, or you’re out. The campers LOVED it. Ever since playing it, they’re always asking when we’ll be playing it next.
Every night we have an all-camp activity, and tonight was Messy Olympics! And it was messy! Stations included spreading peanut butter over a counselor’s face and throwing cheese puffs at them, diving to find rocks in a baby pool filled with oatmeal, shaving a balloon, and pouring chocolate syrup into a cup that’s been placed on another camper’s head (pictures coming soon!). Both campers and counselors had a great time.
After a year of planning and fundraising and preparing, we are so excited for this week! We have an amazing group of counselors and campers/families, and know that this week will be unforgettable. I’m going to try my best to update every night so that we can share it with you too!
